About the Nuke Simulator
NukeSimulator is a free interactive nuclear bomb simulator (nuke map). Pick any city on the map, choose a real warhead — from the Hiroshima bomb to the Tsar Bomba — or enter a custom yield in kilotons, and see the estimated fireball size, air blast radius, thermal radiation and radioactive fallout zones.
How does the nuclear explosion simulator work?
The simulator uses declassified nuclear weapons effects models (based on Glasstone and Dolan's «The Effects of Nuclear Weapons») to calculate blast overpressure, thermal radiation, ionizing radiation and fallout for the given yield and burst height, and draws the affected zones on a real map.
What do the colored rings mean?
Each ring is an estimated effect zone: the fireball, heavy, moderate and light blast damage (20, 5 and 1 psi overpressure), the ionizing radiation dose radius and the range of third-degree burns from thermal radiation.
Are the results accurate?
The results are scientific estimates intended for education. The models assume flat, open terrain: mountains, hills and dense high-rise buildings can shield some areas from the heat flash and the blast and channel damage into others — in Nagasaki, hills confined much of the destruction to the Urakami valley. Weather, building types and the exact weapon design matter too, so real damage can differ noticeably from the rings on the map.
